ANTI-BULLYING INVOLVEMENT
In the late eighties Eric became involved with strategies for preventing and responding to bullying behaviour, particularly in secondary schools, contributing to conferences and media programmes, including a key-note speech at the first ever National Conference on Bullying at The National Geographic Centre in London organised by the charity Kidscape. There followed invitations from all over the country, and he spent many hours and days, within his teaching career, travelling to schools and conferences, seminars and some TV studios, spreading the ‘gospel’ of preventing and dealing with bullying in our schools, as well as responding to bullying behaviour by some teachers, some parents …. and on the difficult subject of bringing up teenagers. Neither Eric nor his wife, Viv, pretend to have been the perfect parents, by a long chalk, but they are very proud of their own children, what they have become, all they have achieved and particularly the five grandchildren they have been presented with!
BROADCASTING AND WRITING
Eric has written, broadcast and spoken extensively for over twenty years on preventing and responding to bullying in schools and is co-author of Bullying – a Practical Guide to Coping for Schools, published by Pearson Educational Press for Kidscape (now in its third edition). He also contributed to ‘How to Stop Bullying’ a Kidscape Training Guide’ and has written three small training books for youth leaders about Teaching, Worship and Drama. He retired – again – from teaching in 2002 but continued with some training of others, conferences, school visits and so on for some years into the new millennium.
